Recognizing Commodore John Barry as the first flag officer of the
United States Navy
The United States House of Representatives on October 7, 2002 passed
a unanimous Resolution recognizing Commodore John Barry as the First
Flag Officer of the United States Navy. The Resolution, H.J.Res.#6
was reintroduced in the House by Congressman Peter King in 2001. The
U. S. Senate did not act on the legislation before the end of the 107th
Congressional Session.
Rep. King introduced House Joint Resolution # 62 into the House on 6/26/2003.
Rep. King introduced H.J. Res.38 into the House on 3/17/05. There are forty
six Co-Sponsors to the bill, five from Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Representatives
signing on as Co-sponsors were Martin Meehan (MA-5), Richard Neal (MA-2), William
Delahunt (MA-10), Edward Markey (MA-7) and James McGovern (MA-3). We thank
them for their support.
